A.to be clean or pure, Pl.Phd.58b, Lg.759c, Phld.Lib.p.9O., Porph.Abst.4.6; of sifted grain, PPetr.2p.2 (iii B.C.): c. gen., to be clean or free from, “φόνου” Pl.Ep.357a; [κακιῶν] Phld.Rh.1.218S.; “ἁμαρτημάτων” Plu.Cat.Mi.24; “ὀνείδους” Luc.Am. 22; κ. πυρετοῦ to be free from fever, Gal.7.503: hence ἡμέραι -εύουσαι ibid.; κ. ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ (sc. τοῦ σώματος) Pl.Phd.67a; κ. γνώμῃ to be pure or clean in mind, Ar.Ra.355; “περί τι” Plb.6.56.15.
2. Rhet., of a writer, to be pure, correct in language, “κ. τὴν διάλεκτον” D.H. Lys.2; οἱ καθαρεύοντες purists, Hdn.Gr.2.224.
3. Gramm., to be preceded by a vowel, to be 'pure' (cf. “καθαρός” 1.5b), A.D.Pron.99.24, Theodos.Can.p.70H.; contain a 'pure' syllable, Hdn.Gr.2.923, Id. ap.Eust.1859.13.
