καταλλ-άσσω , Att. κατάλλ-ττω ,
A.change money, Plu.Arat. 18, etc. (also in Med., D.19.114:—Pass., Matreas ap.Ath.1.19b, with a play on signf. 11); change or give away, τὴν Χάριν τῶν νόμων for the laws, Din.3.21 (s. v. l.); καταλλάσσειν τὸν βίον to leave life, Ael.VH5.2.
b. abs., transgress, contravene regulations, IG5(2).3.2 (Tegea).
2. Med., exchange one thing for another, “ἡδονὰς πρὸς ἡδονάς” Pl.Phd.69a; ἀντί τινος πάντα ibid., cf. Phld.Vit.Herc.1457.10; “βίον πρὸς μικρὰ κέρδη” Arist.EN1117b20; “τι ἐπ᾽ ἀργυρίῳ” Hdn. 2.13.6: abs., exchange prisoners, D.C.Fr.57.36.
II. change a person from enmity to friendship, reconcile, “σφέας” Hdt.5.29, cf. 95, 6.108; “κ. τινὰς πρὸς ἀλλήλους” Arist.Oec.1348b9; “θεὸς κόσμον κ. ἑαυτῷ” 2 Ep.Cor.5.19:—Med., καταλλάσσεσθαι τὴν ἔχθρην τινί to make up one's enmity with any one, Hdt.1.61, cf. 7.145:—Pass., esp. in aor. κατηλλάχθην or κατηλλάγην (former preferred by Trag., latter in Prose), to become reconciled, τινι E.IA1157, X.An.1.6.1, etc.; “πρὸς ἀλλήλους” Th.4.59; θεοῖσιν ὡς καταλλαχθῇ Χόλου that he may be reconciled to them after his anger, S.Aj.744; “κ. πρός τινα ἐκ διαφορᾶς” Ael.VH2.21.
2. Pass., of an offence, to be atoned for, “φόνον ἐπιγαμίαις μὴ καταλλάσσεσθαι μηδὲ Χρήμασιν” OGI218.105 (Ilium, iii B. C.).
