A.overpower, prevail over, τινα Men.Epit.74, Aristeas 21, LXX 2 Ch.8.3, al.; “ὅταν ἡ τῆς πείρας ἀκρίβεια -ισχύῃ τὴν τῶν λόγων πιθανότητα” D.S.1.39: also c. gen., LXX Je.15.18, Alex.Aphr.in Top.248.19; [τῆς ἐκκλησίας] Ev.Matt.l.c.; “τινὸς σοφίᾳ” Ael.NA5.19; Ἄρης κ. τῆς Σελήνης Vett. Val.104.10; γενναίας φύσεως Chor.in Rev.Phil.1.57:—Pass., to be worsted, “ὑπ᾽ ἔρωτος” D.S.1.71; “τῇ μάχῃ” Id.17.45.
2. abs., have the upper hand, prevail, LXX Ex.17.11, al.; κ. τῷ πλήθει to be superior in . . , Plb.11.13.3; “κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν” Ev.Luc.23.23.
b. to be prevalent, “ὁρμαὶ καὶ ζῆλοι παρά τισι κ.” Plb.3.4.6; “κατισχυούσης τῆς θερμότητος” Thphr. CP6.11.7; “κατίσχυκεν ἡ φήμη παρὰ τοῖς πλείστοις” Antig.Mir. 152.
