II. Hom. always metaph., τὸ μὲν τελέει, τὸ δὲ μεσσηγὺ κολούει part he brings to pass, part he cuts off half-accomplished, of the threats of Achilles, Il.l.c.; μηδὲ τὰ δῶρα . . κολούετε curtail them not, Od.11.340; ἕο δ᾽ αὐτοῦ πάντα κολούει cuts off all his hopes, 8.211; κολούειν εἰς τὰ τῆς τέχνης ἔργα hinders performance in the art, Gal.5.733.
2. like κολάζω, which is more freq. in Prose, τὰ ὑπερέχοντα κ. put down, abase those who are exalted, Hdt.7.10.έ, cf.
