κύω , post-Hom. form of κυέω (aor. 1 in Ep., v. infr. 11):
I. in pres. and impf., of females, conceive, Λάβδα κύει τέξει δὲ κτλ. Orac. ap. Hdt.5.92.β́, cf. Ar.Fr.609, Pl.Lg.789e, etc.; “κύω μῆνα ὄγδοον ἤδηLuc.DMeretr.2.1; “κ. ἀπό τινοςId.Gall.19: metaph., “κύει πόλις ἥδεThgn.39.
2. rarely c.acc., to be pregnant with, “οὐδὲ κύουσι πολλὰ κυήματαArist.HA543b22; “παιδίονLuc.DMeretr.2.4: metaph., ψυχή μου ἀεὶ τοῦτο κύουσα (al. κυοῦσα)“ διῆγενX.Cyr.5.4.35:—Pass., to be borne in the womb, “τὰ κυόμενα παιδίαArist.Pr.860a21, Jul.Or.2.99c.
II. in aor. Act. ἔκυ_σα, causal, of the male, impregnate, metaph., “ὄμβρος ἔκυσε γαῖανA.Fr.44.4:—aor. Med. ἐκυ_σάμην, of the female, conceive, “οὓς τέκε κυσαμένηHes.Th.125, cf. 405, h.Hom.1.4; Ζηνί by Zeus, Asius Fr.Ep.1.3 K.; “ὅσσους . . Τυφάονι κύσατο ΚητώEuph.112.—The forms κυέω and κύω seem synonymous, but κυέω κυῶ) is the better-attested form in Att. Prose (κύοντα only v.l. in Pl. Tht.151b, κύοντες is read in Arist.HA544a23 (v.l. κύονες, ποιοῦντες, κύοντα ib.585a3, κυόμενα (v.l. -ούμενα) Pr.l.c., κυόμενον (v.l. -ούμενον) GA730b4, but “κυοῦντεςHA610b3; “ἐκύομενLXX ls.59.13).—The pres. κύω has υ^ in verse, but forms of κυ^έω can be restored by altering the accent.—The causal sense belongs only to the aor. ἔκυ_σα.
