A.dog's skin (so only Anaxandr.65), used for making soldiers' caps: hence in Ep., generally, helmet, κ. ταυρείη, κτιδέη, Il.10.257, 335; κ. χαλκήρης, χαλκοπάρῃος, 3.316, 12.183; “κ. χρυσείη5.743; once of a peasant's cap, “αἰγείη κ.Od.24.231; later περὶ τῇσι κεφαλῇσι [εἶχον] ἐκ διφθερέων πεποιημένας κυνέας leathern caps, Hdt.7.77, cf. Ar.Nu.268, V.445; of the “πέτασος, ἡλιοστερὴς κυνῆ ΘεσσαλίςS.OC314; Ἀρκὰς κ., = Ἀρκαδικὸς πῖλος, Id.Fr.272, cf. Paus.Gr.Fr.72; but usu. helmet, λάμπραι κ.
