λαμπρ-ύνω , mostly in pres. and impf. (v. infr.),
A.make bright or brilliant, “τὸν ἵππον” X.Eq.10.1, cf. App.Anth.3.158; μὴ χρώμασιν （ὄμμασιν codd. Stob.) τὸ σῶμα λ. deck with bright colours, Antiph.264; λαμπρύνει τὴν φωνήν (of garlic) makes the voice clear, Dsc.Eup.1.87:—Med., ἐλαμπρύνοντο τὰς ἀσπίδας polished their shields, X.HG7.5.20:—Pass., of a shield, to be polished or bright, Id.Lac.11.3; also εὕδουσα φρὴν ὄμμασιν λαμπρύνεται is lightened with eyes, A.Eu.104; “λελάμπρυνται κόρας” S.Fr.710; also, to become manifest or notorious, “ἐν ἡμῖν ὁ ψόγος -ύνεται” E.El.1039.
II. Med., make oneself splendid, pride oneself on a thing, ὄχοις καὶ στολῇ -ύνεται ib.966; “γένει” Onos.1.22; distinguish oneself in or by . . , “ὅσα . . χορηγίαις ἢ ἄλλῳ τῳ -ύνομαι” Th.6.16; “μειρακίων -υνομένων ἐν ἅρμασιν” Ar. Eq.556; “λ. ἐν οἷς οὐ δεῖ” Arist.EN1122a33, etc.; “περὶ τὰς εὐωχίας” Str. 14.1.20; “πολλὰ καὶ μεγάλα λαμπρυνάμενος πρὸς τὸ θεῖον” Plu.Nic.26; “τὰ ἄλλα ἐλαμπρύνατο” Id.Alex.70; “ἐπί τινι” Philostr.VA2.43; “πολλὰ περὶ τῶν Μηδικῶν ἔργων” Plu.2.870d.
