A.bath, bathing-place, Hom., always in pl., θερμὰ λοετρά hot bath, Il.22.444, al.; later “θερμὰ λουτρά” A.Ch.670, S.Tr.634 (lyr.), CratesCom.15, etc.; “θερμὰ Νυμφᾶν λουτρά” Pi.O.12.19; also called “Ἡράκλεια λουτρά” Ar.Nu.1051; “λοετρὰ Ὠκεανοῖο” Il.18.489, Od.5.275; σίτοισι καὶ λουτροῖσι in matters of eating and washing, Hdt.6.52; “λουτρῷ χρωμένους” Plu.2.1109b: sg. first in Hes. l.c.; “τραπέσθαι πρὸς τὸ λ.” Pl.Phd.115a, cf. X.Oec.9.7: in pl., bathing-establishment, τὰ δημόσια λ. POxy.1252 B22 (iii A. D.), etc.
2. water for bathing or washing, “ὑδάτων ἐνεγκεῖν λουτρά” S.OC1599; ἐν λουτροῖς while bathing, X.Cyr.7.5.59; λοῦσαί τινα λουτρόν give one a bath, wash one with water, S.Ant.1201, Ar.Lys. 469; λουτρὸν παρέχειν ib.377; λοῦσθαι λουτρόν bathe, A.Fr.366 (note); “λουτρόν ἐστιν, οὐ πότος” Alex.9; νυμφικὰ λουτρά the conveying of water to the bride (cf. λουτροφόρος), Poll.3.43; in NT, of baptism, Ep.Eph. 5.26; “λ. παλιγγενεσίας” Ep.Tit.3.5.
