A.rest, give over, “ὅδε μὲν τάχα λωφήσει” Il.21.292; εἰ λωφήσω τρεῖς ὥρας dub. in Phld.Herc.1251.18.
2. c. gen. (cf. καταλωφάω), take rest or abate from, recover from, χόλου, πόθου, A.Pr. 378, 654; “πόνου” S.Aj.61; “τῆς ὀδύνης” Pl.Phdr.251 c; “φιλοτιμίας λελωφηκυῖαν” Id.R.620c; so “λ. ἀπὸ νόσου καὶ πολέμου” Th.6.12.
3. c. part., cease to do, “πρήσων” A.R.4.819, cf. AP5.187 (Leon.).
4. abate, of pain, Hp.Int.49; of a disease, Th.2.49, Pl.Lg.854c; of misfortunes, Th.7.77; of wind, Arist.Mete.362a7; of the sea, Id.Pr. 934b15; “ὅταν λωφήσωσιν οἱ λίθοι” X.An.4.7.6.
II. trans., lighten, relieve, “ὁ λωφήσων γὰρ οὐ πέφυκέ πω” A.Pr.27: c. gen., ἀχέων λωφήσετε θυμόν relieve your mind from pains, Emp.145.2.
