II. in pl., house, palace, freq. in Hom., “ἐνὶἐνμεγάροισιIl.1.396,418, al.: opp. ἐπ᾽ ἀγροῦ, Od.22.47: later in sg., Pi.O.6.2, P.4.134.
III. sanctuary, shrine, freq. in Hdt. (whouses the word in thissense only), 1.47,65, 2.143, 6.134.
2. tomb, Epigr. Gr.453.2 (Batanaea).
IV. μέγαρα, τά, pits sacred to Demeter and Persephone, into which young pigs were let down in the Thesmophoria, Paus.9.8.1, Porph.Antr.6, Sch.Luc.DMeretr.1:— also written μάγαρον , Men.1031. (For sense IV cf. Hebr. mĕ`ārāh 'cave'.)
