μέσ-αυλος , ον, Ep. μέσσ- , Att. μέτ- : (αὐλή):
I. in Hom. μέσσαυλος, ὁ, or μέσσαυλον, τό (gender unknown), prob. the inner court, inside the αὐλή, where cattle were put at night, 11.11.548, 17.112,657, 24.29; used of the cave of the Cyclops, Od.10.435.
II. Att. Prose and Com. μέταυλος (sc. θύρα), ἡ, the door between the αὐλή and the inner part of the house, Ar.Fr.371; in full, “μέταυλος θύρα” Lys.1.17; also “θύραι μέσαυλοι” E.Alc.549; mesauloe, Vitr.6.7.5.
