I. in Hom. μέσσαυλος, , or μέσσαυλον, τό (gender unknown), prob. the inner court, inside the αὐλή, where cattle were put at night, 11.11.548, 17.112,657, 24.29; used of the cave of the Cyclops, Od.10.435.
II. Att. Prose and Com. μέταυλος (sc. θύρα), , the door between the αὐλή and the inner part of the house, Ar.Fr.371; in full, “μέταυλος θύραLys.1.17; also “θύραι μέσαυλοιE.Alc.549; mesauloe, Vitr.6.7.5.
