A.mese, i. e. the top note of the lower tetrachord in the octave, originally the middle string of the seven-stringed (or of an earlier three-stringed) lyre, Pl.R.443d (cf. Sch.), Arist.Metaph.1018b29, Pr.919b20, Euc.Sect.Can.10; variously defined, Ptol.Harm.2.5, Cleonid.Harm.11, Bacch.Harm.65:—Dor. μέσσα Philol.6.
