μήκιστος , η, ον, Dor. μάκιστος [α_], the only form used by Trag.: irreg. Sup. of μακρός (formed from μῆκος, as αἴσχιστος from αἶσχος),
A.tallest, “τὸν δὴ μήκιστον καὶ κάρτιστον κτάνον ἄνδρα” Il.7.155, cf. Od.11.309.
2. greatest, “μάκιστον σέλας” A.Fr.281.1; “μείζονα [πηδήματα] τῶν μακίστων” S.OT1301 (anap.); “τὰ μάκιστ᾽ ἐμῶν κακῶν” E.Hipp.818 (lyr.); “τὸ μήκιστον τεράων” A.R.4.1364.
3. longest, in point of Time, “ἐπὶ τὸ μήκιστον ἀνθρωπίνου αἰῶνος” X.Ages.10.4: neut. μήκιστον as Adv., for a very long time or in the highest degree, h.Cer.258 (s.v.l.); ὅτι δύνᾳ μάκιστον . . ἐξιδοῦ see to it as far as possible, S.Ph.851 (lyr.); τί νύ μοι μήκιστα γένηται; what is to become of me at last? Od.5.299,465; τὸ μ. at longest, Luc.Herm.50; ἐπὶ μ. for the longest time, Id.Demon.1.
