A.comrade in war, esquire, denoting the slight subordination in which one hero stood to another, as Meriones to Idomeneus, Il.8.263, 10.58, etc. ; Phoenix to Peleus, 23.360 ; so, = ὑπασπιστής, Hdt.5.111.
2. generally, follower, attendant, B.17.35, Hdt.9.50,51, A.Ch.769, Supp. 492,954, S.Ant.1108 ; . μήλων a shepherd, Pi.P.9.64 ; of a female, h.Cer.440. —Cf. ὀπηδός.
