A.one who approaches or comes near, S. Ph. 1164 (lyr.) ; neighbour, Τμώλου π. A. Pers.49 (anap.).
II. esp. of one who approaches a woman, τὸν πελάταν λέκτρων Διός, of Ixion, S. Ph.677 (lyr.).
III. one who approaches to seek protection, dependant, client, Pl. Euthphr.4c, Arist.Ath. 2.2, Phot. ; = Lat. cliens, D.H.1.83, Plu. Rom.13, etc. :—fem. πελάτις , ιδος, Id.Cat.Ma.24. (Cf. ἱκέτης from ἱκνέομαι.)
