1. (sc. μερίς), fiftieth part : hence, tax of two per cent. on exports and imports, at Athens, And.1.133, D.59.27 : pl., Id.24.120 ; “ἐς Ἀθάνας πεντηκοστὰ τῶν λίθωνIG 42(1).103.46 (Epid.) ; at Delos, ib.22.1635.38 (iv B. C.), 11(2).161 A 26 (iii B. C.) ; at Halicarnassus, OGI 46.12 (iii B. C.) ; τῶν πρηθέντων τελείτω π. SIG 229.5 (Erythrae, iv B. C.) ; = Lat. quinquagesima, D.C.55.31 (s. v. l.) : metaph., ταύτην ευὕρηκε Μειδίας καινὴν ἱππικήν τινα πεντηκοστήν invented a new sort of composition of two per cent. in lieu of his cavalry service, i. e. paid this instead of it, D.21.166.
