περι-κα^λύπτω ,
A.cover all round, “πολέμοιο νέφος περὶ πάντα καλύπτει” Il.17.243, cf. 10.201 ; “π. δένδρεον πίλῳ” Hdt. 4.23 ; τινὰ ἱματίοισι or ἐν ἱματίῳ, Hp.Aph.5.59, X.Cyr.7.3.14 : metaph., “π. σωτηρία τοὺς νόμους” Pl.Lg.793b ; τὸ θνητὸν περικάλυπτε τῷ θεῷ (sc. Διονύσῳ), i.e. get drunk, Diph.20 ; “τὰ πάθη” Plu.2.100f ; π. καὶ ἀρνεῖσθαι ib.1013e :—Med. and Pass., cover oneself all round, ib. 51d, etc.
II. put round as a covering, αὐτῷ . . περὶ κῶμα κάλυψα put sleep as a cloak around him, Il.14.359 ; τὸ σῶμα [ψυχῇ] Pl.Ti.34b ; “π. τὰ Χερουβεὶν ἐπὶ τὴν κιβωτόν” LXX 3 Ki.8.7 : metaph., π. τοῖσι πράγμασι σκότον throw a veil of darkness over the deeds, E.Ion 1522.
