A.make trustworthy, πιστοῦν τινα ὅρκοις bind him by oaths, Th.4.88.
II. Pass., to be made trustworthy, give a pledge or warrant, “πιστωθείς” h.Merc.536 ; “ἐπεὶ δ᾽ ἐπιστώθησαν” E.IA66; μοι . . ὅρκῳ πιστωθῆναι ἀπήμονά μ᾽ οἴκαδ᾽ ἀπάξειν bind yourselves to me by oath . . , Od.15.436.
2. feel trust or confidence, to be persuaded, “ὄφρα . . πιστωθῆτον ἐνὶ θυμῷ” 21.218; πιστωθεὶς ὅτι . . feeling confidence that . . , S.OC1039.
III. Med., give mutual pledges of fidelity, exchange troth, “χεῖράς τ᾽ ἀλλήλων λαβέτην καὶ πιστώσαντο” Il.6.233 ; “ἐπιστώσαντ᾽ ἐπέεσσιν” 21.286 ; “π. περὶ τῶν ὅλων πρὸς ἀλλήλους” Plb.18.39.6.
2. πιστοῦσθαί τινα ὑφ᾽ ὅρκου secure his good faith by oaths, S.OC650, cf. Plb.8.15.2.
3. confirm, prove, “τῷ παρόντι τοὐπιόν” E.Fr.1073.6, cf. Phlp.in GA 206.25 ; guarantee, τι Plb.1.43.5, Luc.Philops.5, Nonn.D.13.407 ; τι διότι . .
