πολεμ-ικός , ή, όν,
A.of or for war, “οἱ π. κίνδυνοι” Th.2.43; ἀγῶνες π., opp. εἰρηνικοί, Pl.Lg.729d; βίος ib.829a; πλοῖα, ὅπλα, ib.706b,944e; “χαλκῆν ἀσπίδα -ωτάτην εἶναι” most fit for service, X.Lac.11.3; “χρεία” OGI54.13 (Egypt, iii B.C.); “τέχνη καὶ ἐπιστήμη π.” Pl.R.522c, cf. Lg. 639b; ἡ -κή (sc. τέχνη) the art of war, Id.Sph.222c, etc.; τὰ -κά warlike exercises, τὰ π ἄλκιμος (v.l. πολέμια) Hdt.3.4; “τὰ π. ἀσκεῖν” X.HG 3.4.18, Cyr.1.5.9; “αἱ τῶν π. μελέται” Th.2.39, cf. 89 (v.l.).
2. τὸ -κόν signal for battle (παιὼν π. in Pl.Ep.348b), ἐπειδὰν ὁ σαλπικτὴς σημήνῃ “τὸ π.” X.An.4.3.29, cf. Aen. Tact.4.3; ἀνέκραγε πολεμικόν gave a war-shout, X.An.7.3.33; also of an air on the flute, Tryphoap.Ath.14.618c.
b. fighting part of the people, opp. civilians, Arist.Pol.1291a26, 1329a2.
II. of persons, skilled in war, warlike, Th.1.84, Pl.R. 522e, Lg.643c, etc.: distd. from φιλοπόλεμος, X.An.2.6.1; also “ἵπποι π.” Id.Cyr.7.5.62; “τὸ π.” warlike spirit, Phld.Mus.p.27 K.
III. like an enemy, hostile, X.Vect.4.44; stirring up hostility, opp. “φιλικός, πολεμικὸν ἔρις καὶ ὀργή” Id.Mem.2.6.21: metaph., “ἀντίθεσις π. καὶ ἀσύμβατος” Plu.2.946e. Adv. -κῶς, ἔχειν, opp. εἰρηνικῶς, Isoc.5.46; “π. διακεῖσθαι” Id.6.39: Sup. “-ώτατα, ἔχειν πρός τινα” X.An.6.1.1.
