A.“ἐπόλισσα” A.R.1.178, “πόλισσα” Il.7.453: (πόλις):— build a city: generally, build, “[τεῖχος] πολίσσαμεν” Il. l.c.; ἣν ἐπόλισσεν (sc. τὴν πάτρην) Epigr.Gr.982 (Philae):—Pass., “Ἴλιος πεπόλιστο” Il. 20.217; “Δωδώνη πεπόλισται” Hes.Fr.134.5, cf. Hdt.4.108, 5.52, al.; “ἐφ᾽ ἁμαξῶν πεπολισμένοι” Philostr. VA6.25:—Med., build for oneself, A.R.1.1346; “τὴν Ῥώμην σὺν τοῖς ἄλλοις ἐπολίσαντο” D.H.1.30.
II. build a city or cities on or in a place, “χωρίον πολίζειν” X.An.6.6.4; “τὴν χώραν” Str.8.5.4; “τὸν τόπον” Plu.Rom.9:—Pass., “εἴη ἡ Παιονίη ἐπὶ τῷ Στρυμόνι ποταμῷ πεπολισμένη” Hdt.5.13.—Ep., Ion., X., and later Prose.
