A.winged, flying, ἐν ποτανοῖς among fowls, Pi.N.3.80; “π. οἰωνοίE.Hel.1478 (lyr.); “πέδιλαId.El.460 (lyr.); “π. εἴ σέ τις θεῶν κτίσαιId.Supp.620 (lyr.), cf. 1142 (lyr.): prov. of vain pursuits, “διώκει παῖς ποτανὸν ὄρνινA.Ag.394 (lyr.): metaph., ποτανὸς ἐν Μοίσαισι, i.e. soaring in the arts of the Muses, Pi.P.5.114; ποτανᾷ μαχανᾷ by soaring art, i.e. by poesy, Id.N.7.22; “ἐμᾷ ποτανὸς ἀμφὶ μαχανᾷId.P. 8.34; ποταναὶ (v.l. ποτ᾽ αἰναὶ)“ τευθίδεςEpich.61.—Dor. for ποτηνός , which occurs only in Poet. ap. Pl.Phdr.252b.
