(in med. form) X.Eq.Mag.2.7 : pf. “-ηγόρευμαιId.Mem.1.2.[35]:—tell beforehand, τι Th.1.68: c. inf., declare beforehand that . . , Hdt.1.74,91; “π. ὅτι . .Th.2.13, X.Cyr.3.1.3; ὡς . . ib.7.5.34; advise beforehand,πολλοῖς π. τὰ μὲν ποιεῖν τὰ δὲ μὴ ποιεῖνId.Mem.1.1.4, cf. Pl.Lg.907d.
2. foretell, prophesy,τὸ μέλλονX.Smp.4.5.
II. declare or proclaim publicly, τι Hdt.7.10.δ᾽, 8.83; “τινί τιId.1.153; “ἰσονομίην ὑμῖν π.Id.3.142; πόλεμον (with or without τινι) Th.1.131, D.11.20, etc.: c. inf., Pl.Cri.51d: esp. of a herald or public officer, Hdt.3.61,62; also, have a thing proclaimed by herald,ὑπὸ κήρυκος π.Id.9.98 (though ἀναγορεύειν was properly the word for heralds, προαγορεύειν for magistrates, X.An.2.2.20).
