B. mostly Med., call out to fight, challenge, “Αἴας δὲ πρῶτος προκαλέσσατο” Il.13.809, cf. Od.8.142; “ἴθι νῦν προκάλεσσαι . . Μενέλαον ἐξαῦτις μαχέσασθαι” Il.3.432, cf. 7.39; προκαλέσσατο χάρμῃ ib.218; so, later, “π. εἰς ἀγῶνα” X.Mem.2.3.17, cf. Luc.Symp.20; “εἰς μονομαχίαν” Ael.VH1.24; “μάχῃ” Anacreont.12.7; ταῦτα π. τοὺς συνόντας thus . . , X.Cyr.1.4.4; challenge to drink, Critias Fr.6.7 D.; π. τινὰ συμπαίζειν; συγγυμνάζεσθαι, Anacr.14.4, Pl.Smp.217c: prov., ἱππέας εἰς πεδίον προκαλῇ, Σωκράτη εἰς λόγους προκαλούμενος, of one who challenges another in his own department, Id.Tht.183d, cf. 2. invite or summon, “τινὰ ἐς λόγους” Hdt.4.201, Th.3.34; “ἐς σπονδὰς καὶ διάλυσιν πολέμου” Id.4.19; “ἐπὶ ξυμμαχίαν” Id.5.43; “ἐπὶ τιμωρίαν” D.21.226; “πρὸς τὸ συνδειπνεῖν” Pl.Smp.217c; [ἰχθῦς] πρὸς τὴν θήραν π. entice them out, Arist. HA534a17; πρὸς αὑτόν τινας endeavour to attach them to oneself, Plb.3.77.7.
3. c. acc. et inf., invite one to do . . , Trag.Adesp. 165 (= Com.Adesp.1295), etc.; “π. τινὰ ἐς λόγον ἐλθεῖν” Isoc.5.91; “εἰρήνην ποιεῖσθαι” X.HG2.2.15, cf. 4. abs., αὐτῶν προκαλεσαμένων at or after their invitation, ib. 20, cf. Pl.R.451c; appeal, “προκαλεῖσθαι περί τινος ἐπὶ Ῥωμαίους” Plb.24.9.13.
II. c. acc. rei, offer, propose, “δίκην” Th.1.39, cf. 2.72, 73, Ar. Ach.984, etc.; “τὰ εἰρημένα” Th.5.37; “τὰς σπονδάς” Ar.Eq.796: with acc. pers. added, προκαλεῖσθαί τινας τὴν εἰρήνην offer them peace, Id.Ach. 652, cf. Pl.Euthphr.5a, Chrm.169c.
2. law-term, make an offer or challenge to the opponent for bringing about a decision, e.g. for submitting the case to arbitration, letting slaves be put to the torture, etc., “προκαλοῦνται πρόκλησιν ἡμᾶς” D.37.12, cf. 40.44, Antipho 1.6: c. acc. pers., challenge him, Id.6.23; π. εἰς πάντα τινάς ib.26; “εἰς ἀντίδοσιν” Lys.24.9; “εἰς ὅρκον” D.52.17; “εἰς ἐμφανῶν κατάστασιν” Is.6.31 (leg. προσ-）; π. τινά τι make one an offer, D.48.4, cf. 37.42: c. acc. et inf., π. τὴν μητέρα ὀμόσαι offer that she should take an oath, Id.55.27: c. inf. only, “π. ἐθέλειν ἐπιδεῖξαι” Id.27.50, cf. 54.27; also “π. κατά τινος εἰς μαρτυρίαν” Id.29.20 (προσκ- codd.):—Pass., π. περὶ Ἐπιδάμνου ἐς κρίσιν Th.l.34.
