προσβαίνω , Dor. ποτι- Sophr. in Stud.Ital.10.123: fut. -βήσομαι: aor. 2 προσέβην: aor. Med. προσεβήσατο, Ep.
A.“-ετο” Il.14.292:— put one's foot against, Hom. (who uses only aor. Act. and Med.), “λὰξ προσβὰς ἐκ νεκροῦ χάλκεον ἔγχος ἐσπάσατ᾽” Il.5.620; πρὸς τὸ κάτω τοῦ τόξου τῷ ἀριστερῷ ποδὶ π., so as to get a purchase in drawing it, X.An.4.2.28; “τῷ ποδί” Arist.Mech.852b25.
2. approach, c. acc. loci, in Hom. mostly of mountains or heights, “Ἥρη . . προσεβήσετο Γάργαρον ἄκρον” Il.14.292, cf. 2.48, 23.117, Od.21.5, Hes.Sc.33, A.Pr. 130 (lyr.), E.Alc.480, etc.; ἐς ἄλσος, ἐς τὴν Αάκαιναν, S.OC125 (lyr.), X.HG7.1.29; “ποτιβάντες νυν πὸτ τὰν ἱστίαν θωκεῖτε” Sophr. l.c.<*> c. dat., τῷ τείχει π. Pl.Phdr.227d, etc.
3. mount, ascend, “κατά τι” Hdt.1.84, cf. Plb.7.17.4; “πρὸς λόφον” Id.1.30.10, etc.; ὄρει π. climb up a mountain, of a town, Philostr.VA2.9; “τοῦ ποταμοῦ πρὸς πάντα τὰ χώματα προσβαίνοντος” PPetr.2p.22 (iii B.C.).
4. abs., walk, “π. μακράν” S.Ph.42.
5. metaph., come upon, τίς σε . . προσέβη μανία; Id.OT1300 (anap.); “ἄλλοις ἄλλα π. ὀδύνα” E.IT195 (lyr.).
b. attain an age, “ἐκ παιδὸς τὸν ἄνδρα προσβάς” Sardis 7(1).79c5 (iii A.D.).
c. join a group, “ἐπίκρισις τῶν -βαινόντων εἰς τοὺς ἀπὸ γυμνασίου” POxy. 257.5 (i A.D.), cf. Sammelb.7440.10 (ii A.D.), etc.
