A.make over to, add or attach to, “π. τισὶ τὴν Κέρκυραν” Th. 1.55, cf. 2.2, 3.70, etc.; “Λέσβον π. τῇ πόλει” X.HG4.8.28, etc.; “χάριν” D.60.14, cf. Plot.6.1.21.
2. μνημείῳ κακὸν π. do damage to, MAMA4.27.
3. = προσποιέομαι 11.3, “ὡς εἴη” X.Eph.1.5.
II. mostly in Med., with aor. Pass. in Plb. (v. infr. 5), D.S.15.46, 19.6:—procure for oneself, “ξύλινον πόδα” Hdt.9.37; include in one's purview, Plot.6.1.19, 6.3.8, 6.3.19: most freq. of persons, attach to oneself, win or gain over, “ἑταιρηΐην” Hdt.5.71, cf. 6.66, Th.4.77, etc.; “τὸν δῆμον” Ar.Eq.215; [θεούς] X.Vect.6.3: c.dupl.acc., φίλους π. τινάς as friends, Hdt.1.6; “εὔνουν π. τινά” E.Hel.1387; “ὑπηκόους τὰς πόλεις” Th.1.8; “π. χωρίον ἐς τὴν ξυμμαχίαν” Id.2.30.
2. take to oneself what does not belong to one, pretend to, lay claim to, c. acc., “τὴν τῶν γεφυρῶν οὐ διάλυσιν” Id.1.137; “φήμην” Aeschin.2.166; “μείζω τῶν ὑπαρχόντων” Arist.EN1127b9: c. gen. partit., π. τῶν χρημάτων claim some of . . , Ar. Ec.871, cf. Is.4.3,7.
3. generally, pretend, affect, “ὀργήν” Hdt.2.121. “δ́; τὸ δεῖσθαι” Isoc.1.24; π. ἔχθραν use it as a pretence, allege, Th.8.108; “π. Ἀριστοτέλην” Luc.Pisc.50: c.acc.part., “προσποιούμενος τὸν ἡδόμενον” Ph.2.531.
4. c. inf., pretend to do or to be, Hdt.3.2, Antipho 2.4.2, Lys.1.13; ὅσοι πολιτικοὶ π. εἶναι profess to be, Pl.Grg. 519c, cf. Alc.1.108e, etc.; “π. μὲν εἰδέναι, εἰδότες δὲ οὐδέν” Id.Ap.23d, cf. 26e; ὅρα μὴ τούτων μὲν ἐχθρὸς ᾖς, ἐμοὶ δὲ προσποιῇ (sc. εἶναι) D.18.125; μὴ ἀποκτείνας π. (sc. ἀποκτεῖναι) Lys.13.75: aor.Pass., “-ποιηθεὶς στρατεύειν” D.S.19.6: c. inf. fut., make as if one would, X.An.4.3.20, etc.
5. with a neg., pretend the contrary, δεῖ δέ, εἰ καὶ ἠδίκησαν, μὴ προσποιεῖσθαι one must make as if it were not so, Th.3.47, cf. Thphr. Char.1.5; “τούτων οὐ προσποιουμένων” D.47.10; “οὐδὲν πέπονθας δεινόν, ἂν μὴ προσποιῇ” Men.Epit.Fr.8, cf. Philem.23: aor. Pass., “σαφῶς εἰδὼς . . , οὐ προσποιηθεὶς δέ” Plb.5.25.7, cf. 31.14.1.
