A.presidency, at Athens the period during which the πρυτάνεις of each φυλή in turn presided in the βουλή and ἐκκλησία, Antipho 6.45, And.1.73; ἑνδεκάτῃ τῆς πρυτανείας (sc. τῆς Πανδιονίδος) Decr. ap. D.24.27, cf. Lex ib.39, IG12.57.53,al., 22.212.4, 223 A4, al.: also κατὰ πρυτανείαν by presidencies, i.e. every 35 or 36 days, Lys.30.5, D.59.27; ὁ γραμματεὺς ὁ κατὰ π. IG22.120.16, al.; καθ᾽ ἑκάστην π. Aeschin.3.25.
II. office or government of πρυτάνεις, at Miletus, Arist.Pol.1305a17; at Rhodes, Plu.2.813d (pl.); at Halicarnassus, SIG1015.2; at Mytilene, IG 12(2).68.
2. any public office held by rotation for given periods; π. τῆς ἡμέρης the chief command for the day, held by each general in turn, Hdt.6.110.
