A.vapour-bath, made by throwing odorous substances on hot embers confined under a cloth, Hdt.4.75; “πυρίαις χρῆσθαι ἐκ λίθων διαπύρων” Str.3.3.6; “τὰ σώματα ταῖς π. εὖ διατίθησι” Plu.2.658d; πυρίαν ἐφεῦρεν [Μήδεια] Palaeph.43: metaph., “γίνονται οἷον πυρίαι ἐν τῷ αἵματι” Arist.PA651a1.
2. generally of all forms of external application of heat, ξηραὶ π. Hp.Acut.21; ὑγραί, ξηραί, Gal.15.519, cf. Hp.Aph.5.28, 6.31; of cauteries, “πυρίῃσι καυτήρων” Aret.CD1.2.
