πυρρός , ά (Ion. ή), όν, but Trag. and Dor. πυρσός , ή (Dor. ά), όν, E.Ph.32, HF361 (lyr.), Mosch.2.70, cj. in A.Pers.316; rare in Prose, Plu.Pel.22: (πῦρ):—
A.flame-coloured, yellowish-red (“πυρρὸν ξανθοῦ τε καὶ φαιοῦ κράσει γίγνεται” Pl.Ti.68c, cf. Arist.Metaph.1054b13, Gal.9.600), ᾠοῦ τὸ π. the yolk of an egg, Hp.Mul.2.171, PLit.Lond.170 (i A.D.); “ἡ λευκότης γίγνεται πυρρή” Hp.Aër.20; of sediment in urine, Id.Epid.6.1.5.
2. esp. of persons with red hair, Xenoph.16.2, Hdt.4.108; “π. τὸ Σκυθικὸν γένος” Hp.Aër.20; οἱ ἁλιεῖς π. Arist.Pr.966b26; “π. τρίχες” Id.GA785a19; of the colour of the first beard, γενειάς A.l.c.; “γένυες” E.Ph.32; [θρίξ] Theoc.15.130, cf. 6.3.

4. of more positive colour, red, “χλανίς” Hdt.3.139; “ῥόδον” Mosch.2.70; “ἕψημα” LXX Ge.25.30; τὸ π. redness, Ar.Ec.329:—Ep. Comp. (for πυρρότερα）, πυ^ρώτερα φοινίσσεσθαι to be of a brighter red, Arat.798.
5. blushing, Ar.Eq.900; also κύων . . πύρσ᾽ ἔχουσα δέργματα glaring with bloodshot eyes, E.Hec.1265.
