A.“πυρσά” E.Rh.97: (πῦρ, πυρρός):—firebrand, torch, Il.18.211 (pl.), E.Ph.1377, etc.: pl., fires, “λίθος μήτηρ πυρσῶν” AP6.28 (Jul. Aegypt.); “ἠελίοιο” Opp.H.4.353; of lightning, Orac. ap. Eus.PE6.3: metaph., “ἅψαι πυρσὸν ὕμνων” Pi.I.4(3).43, cf. AP5 Praef.; “πυρσὸν ἄναπτε κακῶν” IG12(5).229.14 (Paros): pl., of the fires of love, Theoc.23.7, AP12.17.
II. beacon or signal-fire ( = Att. φρυκτός), Hdt.7.183, 9.3, Aen.Tact.6.7, Plb.10.44.10, etc.: metaph., “πυρσὸν ὣς Ἕλλα_σι φαίνων” B.12.82.
