θέσφα^τ-ος , ον, (θεός, φημί)
A.spoken by God, decreed, “μόρος” A.Ag.1321; “ἥκει θ. βίου τελευτή” S.OC1472: mostly in phrase θέσφατόν ἐστι, it is ordained, “ὣς γὰρ θ. ἐστι” Il.8.477, cf. E.IA1556: c. dat. pers. et inf., “σοὶ δ᾽ οὐ θ. ἐστι . . θανέειν” Od.4.561, cf. 10.473, Pi.P.4.71, Orac.in Ar.Pax1073; so “εἴ τι θ. πατρὶ . . ἱκνεῖθ᾽, ὥστε πρὸς παίδων θανεῖν” S.OC969.
2. Subst. θέσφατα, τά, divine decrees, oracles, Od.11.151,297; παλαίφατα θ. 13.172, cf. Pi.I.8(7).34: sg., E.IT121.
