A.eating flesh, carnivorous, τὰ ς. (sc. ζῷα) Arist.HA488a14; ἔντομα ib.556b21; ὄρνεον ς. Plu.Cleom.39; ταῦροι οἱ καλούμενοι ς. Ael.NA17.45.
II. λίθος ς. a limestone (of which the best kind was quarried at Assos in the Troad), remarkable for consuming the flesh of corpses laid in it, Erastus ap.Poll.10.150, Dsc.5.124, Cels.4.31.7, Plin.HN2.211, 36.131, Aët.7.41: hence σαρκοφάγος , , coffin, IG14.1472, cf. Juv.10.172.
