σφέτερ-ος , α, ον, possessive Adj. of the 3rd pers. pl. σφεῖς,
A.their own, their, Il.17.287, Od.1.274, al., Hes. Th.155, Pi.P.10.38; strengthd., “αὐτῶν σφετέρῃσιν ἀτασθαλίῃσινOd.1.7; rare in Com., Ar.Ra.1464, Fr.350; in Prose the gen. ἑαυτῶν is commonly used, but σφέτερος also occurs, Th.3.95, 7.1, IG12.29.6, 57.46, Pl.Euthd.304c; τὰ ς. their own property, Th.2.20, X. HG5.3.12; “ὅσοι τὰ ς. φρονοῦντες . . περιῆσανTh.3.68, cf. X.HG7.5.5; τὸν ς. (sc. φόβον) their own (fear), Th.6.36; τὸ ς. αὐτῶν their own business, Pl.Sph.243b; τὸ ς. αὐτῶν συμφέρον their own interest, Arist.Pol. 1296a36; ἀπὸ τῆς ς. αὐτῶν (sc. χώρας) X.Ath.2.5, cf. IG12(1).977.16 (Carpathos, iv B.C.); νόμοις χρῆσθαι τοῖς ς. αὐτῶν ib.22.1.15; οἱ ς. their own people, Th.6.71, X.HG2.4.18.
2. also of the 3rd pers. sg., his or her own, his, her, for ἑός, ὅς, Hes.Sc.90, Pi.O.13.61, P.4.83, A.Ag.760 (lyr.), Pers.900 (lyr.), and in later Prose, Plb.7.14.3, etc.
II. sts. also used of other persons:
1. of 2nd pl., = ὑμέτερος, your own, your, Il.9.327 (sed leg. μαρναμένοις), Hes.Op.2, A.R.4.1327, AP9.134; cf. “σφεῖςB. 111.
b. of 2nd dual, Alcm.3.
2. of 2nd sg., = σός, thine own, only in Theoc.22.67.
3. of 1st sg., = ἐμός, mine own, Id.25.163.
4. of 1st pl., = ἡμέτερος, our own, X.Cyr.6.1.10 codd., A.R.4.1353, Plb.11.4.3, 11.31.6, App.Mith.5, etc. --Cf. σφός.
