4. Med., seal an article to show that it is pledged, ἐγγύην ς. Plu.Pomp. 5, Arr.Epict.2.13.7: abs., make an impression with a seal for any purpose, “καθάπερ οἱ σφραγιζόμενοι τοῖς δακτυλίοιςArist.Mem.450a32.
II. metaph. senses:
1. close up as if with a seal, in Pass., ἐσφραγισμένην ἀκριβῶς οὐλήν a fully closed cicatrix, Gal.12.215:— Med., οὓς . . ἀφθόγγων στομάτων σφρηγίσσατο δεσμῷ, i.e. made them mute, Nonn.D.26.261.
3. set a seal of approval upon, confirm, AP9.236 (Loll.); “ς. ὅτι . . Ev.Jo.3.33:—freq. in Med., “ς. ποιητικαῖς φωναῖςS.E.M.1.271; ς. αὐτοῖς τὸν καρπόν assure them of it, Ep.Rom.15.28.
4. generally, mark, ψάμμος . . νῶτον οὐκ ἐσφράγισεν the sand never marked his back, i.e. he never fell in the sand, APl.3.25 (Phil.); δεινοῖς . . σημάντροισιν ἐσφραγισμένοι, of wounded persons, E.IT1372; σφραγιζομένη γελασίνοις marked with dimples, AP5.34 (Rufin.); “καμήλους ἐσφραγισμένας εἰς τὸν δεξιὸν μηρὸν νῦ καὶ ἦταBGU87.12,26 (ii A.D.).
5. set an end or limit to, “σφραγίσαι ἁμαρτίαςThd.Da. 9.24 (“σπανίσαιLXX):—Med., “Ῥώμην ἀνερχομένῳ σφράγισαι ἠελίῳAP 9.297 (Antip.); πάντα δι᾽ ἀλλήλων πολὺς σφραγίζεται αἰών, i.e. the death of one creature is the birth of another, Archelaus ap.Antig. Mir.89.
