A.throb, beat violently (cf. σφυγμός), Hp.Epid.2.5.16, 2.6.5, Judic.33, Theoc.11.71.
2. beat, of the pulse, “ς. τὸ αἷμα ἐν ταῖς φλεψίArist.HA521a6; πηδῶσα οἷον τὰ σφύζοντα like the veins or arteries, Pl.Phdr.251d; μέρος [“ἐμβρύου] μήτε θερμὸν μήτε σφύζονSor.2.63.
3. metaph. of any violent motion, “σφύζοντος καὶ σφαδᾴζοντος καὶ πηδῶντοςLongin.Rh. p.201 H., cf. Dam.Pr.221; ς. ἐπὶ ταῦτα to be very eager after . . , Anon. ap.Suid.
