II. sacred enclosure, precinct, Hdt.4.62 (v.l.), S.Ph.1328, E. (v. infr.), IGl.c., SIG247 K1 1155 (Delph., iv B.C.), Maiist.23, LXX 2 Ma.14.33; “ὁ ς. τοῦ ἱεροῦ” OGI 702.4 (Egypt, ii A.D.): acc. to Ammon.Diff.p.94 V. (cf. Call.Fr.38P. (ap. Sch.Oxy.Th.2.17), Plu.Cim.8, Epigr.Gr.781.7 (Cnidus)), the σηκός was sacred to a hero, the ναός to a god, a distinction not observed (v. Poll.1.6) by the Poets, cf. Trag.Adesp.424, E.Ph.1751 (lyr.), Rh.501, with Ion 300, etc.
