A.= σκάλλω, stir, poke, “ἄνθρακαςAr. Pax440; πῦρ μαχαίρᾳ μὴ ς., i.e. don't provoke an angry m<*>n, Pythag. prov. in Arist.Fr.197, cf. Plu.Num.14, Luc.VH2.28, <*>L. 8.17; ς. τὰ ὦτα, τὸ οὖς, Arist.Pr.960b35, 961a37: abs., of pou<*>y, scratch, Plu.2.516d: prov., αἰγὸς τρόπον μάχαιραν ἐσκάλευσά <μοι>, i. e. I have unearthed the weapon for my own destruction, Com.Adesp.47 D.
