A.“-άσω” LXX Ex.40.3: (σκέπω) prose form of σκεπάω:— cover, shelter, “ς. τὰ δεόμενα σκέπης” X.Mem.3.10.9, cf. Eq. 12.8, Arist. IA711b32, PA658b6; ς . [τινὰ] ἱματίοις cover him with blankets, POxy.1088.47 (i A.D.):—Med., aor. 1, Gal.4.549:—Pass., “ὁκόσα ὑπὸ τοῦ ἱματίου ἐσκέπασται” Hp.Aër.8, cf. X.Cyr.8.8.17, Arist.GA785a27; esp. of armour, Plb.1.22.10, etc.; “δοραῖς τὸ σῶμα ς.” POxy.1241 iv 18 (ii A.D.); ἐσκεπασμένην σκοπαῖς guarded, watched, Lyc.1311; “ς. ἀπὸ καύματ ος” LXX Si.14.27.
2. protect or shelter, esp. by patronage, “τοὺς πλινθουλκούς, οὒς ἔδει λειτουργεῖν” PSI4.440.14 (iii B.C.):—Pass., PHib.1.35.10 (iii B.C.), UPZ110.15 (ii B.C.).
b. exercise unauthorized patronage over, τὰς ἱερὰς ἀρούρας Wilcken Chr.65.60 (ii B.C.).
