A.to be or dwell in a tent, encamp, also generally, to be quartered or billeted, οἰκίαι . . ἐν αἷς αὐτοὶ ἐσκήνησαν (v.l. -ωσαν, -ουν) Th.1.89; “ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ -οῦντιPSI4.340.13 (iii B.C.); “αἱ κῶμαι ἐν αἷς ἐσκήνουνX.An. 1.4.9; “κατὰ ναῦν ἔμελλον οἱ ναῦται -ήσεινId.HG5.1.20; ἐσκήνησαν εἰς κώμας went to villages and quartered themselves there, Id.An.7.7.1; “πρὸς τῷ ὄρει -οῦντοςId.HG4.6.7; “ἐν τῷ ὄρει, ἔνθαπερ ἐσκήνουνId.An.4.8.25; ἐσκήνουν ἐν τῷ αἰγιαλῷ ib.6.4.7, etc.; οἴκοι -οῦντας, ἔξω -οῖεν, have one's meals at home, abroad, Id.Lac.5.2, 15.4: hence, banquet, κατελάμβανον κἀκείνους -οῦντας ἐστεφανωμένους κτλ. Id.An. 4.5.33.—For the Med. forms, v. σκηνάω (σκηνᾶσθαι is certainly found in Pl., and the other Med. forms may belong to it; cf. “σκηνόω1.2).
