A.“στένον” Hom. (v. infr.):— Poet. Verb, moan, sigh, groan, “μέγα δ᾽ ἔστενε κυδάλιμον κῆρ” Il.10.16, Od.21.247, cf. Il.18.33; “ἐν δέ τέ οἱ κραδίῃ ς. ἄλκιμον ἦτορ” 20.169; of the sea, “ὁ δ᾽ ἔστενεν οἴδματι θύων” 23.230; “στένει βυθός” A. Pr.432 (lyr.); “ἐκοίμισε στένοντα πόντον” S.Aj.675; of the turtledove, Theoc.7.141; in Trag. of persons groaning aloud, A.Pers.285, Ag.445 (lyr.); “δμωαῖς προθήσειν πένθος . . στένειν” S.Ant.1249:— Med., “κλαίω, στένομαι” A.Th.873 (anap.); “στενομένα πόλις” E.Ion 721 (lyr.).
