στενάχω [α^], poet. lengthd. form of στένω, only pres. and impf., Ep.
A.στενάχεσκονIl.19.132, Q.S.3.549 (aor. is ἐστονάχησα, v. στοναχέω), and mostly in pres. part.:—groan, sigh, wail, freq. in Hom., ἁδινὰ ς. Il.24.123, al.; βαρέα ς. 8.334, al.; βαρὺ ς. Od.8.95,534; μεγάλα (as v.l. for βαρέα) 4.516, 23.317; πυκνὰ μάλα ς. Il.18.318, 21.417; also in Trag. (lyr.), as S.El.141; πατρός (dub. l.) ib.1076: metaph. of the roar of torrents, Il.16.391 (Med. of the loud breathing of horses galloping, ib.393); “θὴρ . . στενάχων βρέμειA.R.1.1247; στοᾶς στεναχούσης groaning from being overcrowded, Ar.Ach.548.

II. trans., bewail, lament, “τὴν αἰεὶ στενάχεσκε19.132, cf. Callin.1.17; so in Trag. (lyr.), “τὸ παρόν . . πῆμα στενάχωA.Pr.99 (anap.), cf. E.Ph. 1551 (lyr.), al.:—Med., “τοὺς δὲ στενάχοντοOd.9.467. Cf. στεναχίζω, στοναχέω.
