συγχωρ-έω , fut.
A.-ήσωX.HG3.2.12 (codd., f.l. for -ῆσαι), Isoc.6.13, “-ήσομαιE.IT741, Pl.Tht.191c, Men.Her.Fr.6, etc.:—come together, meet, πέτραι συγχωροῦσαι the Symplegades, E.IT124 (lyr.); combine, opp. ἐκχωρέω, Anaxag.15; “ς. ἕτερον ἑτέρῳArist.Cael.297a11; also συγχωρεῖν λόγοις meet in argument, bandy words with one, E.Hipp. 703; but in Antipho 5.27, ς. τῷ τινων λόγῳ = assent.
II. get out of the way, make way, τινι Ar.V.1516 (anap.) give way, yield, defer to, τινι Id.Lys.1111 (anap.), Th.1.140, Pl. l.c., etc.; “ταῖσι κατὰ τὸν βίον ἀνάγκαιςDemocr.289, cf. E.Fr.965; Συρηκοσίοισι ς. τῆς ἡγεμονίης withdraw in their favour from the command, Hdt.7.161; ξ. ἀλλήλοις make a compromise, c. inf., Th.3.75; to be in collusion with, connive at, “τοῖς πονηροῖςD.34.52; ξ. πρός τινας come to terms with them, Th.2.59, 3.27; οὐ ξυγχωρεῖν refuse to come to terms, Id.2.66, cf. 3.96, X.HG7.1.27.
2. accede, assent to, acquiesce in, “τῇ γνώμῃHdt.4.148, Th.7.72; γνώμῃ μιᾷ συνεχωρείτην, c. inf., agreed to do, E.Hec.125 (anap.); c. acc. et inf., allow that . . , Hdt. 2.2, Pl.Phd.100a; “τοῖσιν εὖ λεχθεῖσι ς. λόγοιςE.Hipp.299; opp. ἐναντιοῦσθαι, And.3.1; “ς. πάθεσιν ἐναντιουμένηνPl.Phd.94b: abs., agree, acquiesce, assent, “συγχώρει θέλωνS.Ph.1343, cf. Hdt. 3.83, 4.43, 5.40, Pl.Lg.794c, D.18.227; τὸ συγκεχωρηκὸς τῆς εὐσεβείας yielding, unexacting temper of piety, Id.21.59:—later in Pass., to be allowed, “τέως οὐ συνεχωρήθην ἐξελθεῖνPOxy.1842.8 (vi A.D.).
4. concede or grant in argument, “τί τινιPl.Lg.811b, cf. R. 383c, al.: c. acc. et inf., grant that . . , ib.489d, Tht.169d, 183b, al.; “ς. ὅτι . . Id.Lg.705e; “ς. τάδε, ὡς . . Id.R.543b; “ς. τοῦτο, ὡς . . Id.Euthphr.13c, al.; ς. τοὺς τόκους agree to accept, D.56.22:—Pass., “τὰ συγκεχωρημένα ὑπὸ πάντωνPl.Phlb.14d.
5. forgive a debt, D.L. 1.45.
7. impers. συγχωρεῖ, it is agreed, it may be done, ὅπῃ ἂν ξυγχωρῇ as may be agreed, Th.5.40.
8. εἰ συγχωροίη if it were possible, v.l. in X.Eq.9.11.
