A.conception, pregnancy, only in Men. 1085.
2. grip, hold, in wrestling, metaph., Simp. in Cael.354.5; so perh. mental grasp, participation, Phld.Mus.p.103 K. (pl.).
II. Act., that which holds together, συλλαβαὶ πέπλων, i.e. a girdle, A. Supp.457.
2. Pass., that which is held together, esp. of several letters taken together so as to form one sound, syllable, “βοᾷ . . γραμμάτων ἐν συλλαβαῖςId.Th.468; ἄφωνα καὶ φωνοῦντα (sic codd.) “συλλαβάς τε θείςE.Fr.578.2, cf. Pl.Tht.202b, Gal.15.6, etc.; γράψαντος τὰς αὐτὰς ς. ἅσπερ Κτησιφῶν νῦν γέγραφε verbatim et literatim, D.18.83; “ς. βραχεῖα καὶ μακράArist.Cat.4b33, cf. Zeno Stoic.1.70, Phld.Po.2.15, etc.
3. συλλαβαί,= Lat. literae, a letter, Cod.Just.1.1.7 Prooem., Men.Prot.p.41 D., Sammelb.7438.5 (vi A.D.).
