A.bringing together, collecting, “βελῶνPolem.Cyn.24; conjunction, “νούσων μυρίων τε καὶ κακῶνAret. SD2.11; comparison, “τὰς ξ. τῶν βουλευμάτωνS.OT44 (but in signf. 11.1, = τὰς συντυχίας καὶ ἀποβάσεις, acc. to Sch.):—pedantically for συμβολή, a contribution, Luc.Lex.6.
2. mishap, misfortune, Hippon.49.4, etc.; early writers freq. add an epith., “ς. ἄχαριςHdt.1.41, 7.190; “οἰκτράPi.O.7.77; “κακήA.Pers.445; “τάλαιναS.El.1179: c. gen., “ς. πάθουςA.Pers.436; κακοῦ ib.1030 (lyr.): but the word came to be used alone in a bad sense, συμφορᾷ δεδαιγμένοι (or δεδαγμ-) Pi.P.8.87; “ὑπὸ τῆς ς. ἐκπεπληγμένοςHdt.3.64; “συμφορῇ τοιῇδε κεχρημένοςId.1.42, cf.
