συμπαθ-έω ,
A.to be sympathetically affected, “δοκεῖ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα συμπαθεῖν ἀλλήλοις” Arist.Phgn.808b11; “ξ. κεφαλῇ τὰ μέσα” Aret.CD1.4, cf. Gal.8.33:—Pass., J.AJ16.11.8.
2. c. dat. pers., sympathize with, “τοῖς φίλοις” Epicur.Sent.Vat.66.
3. c. dat. rei, sympathize in, feel for, “ἀτυχίαις” Isoc.4.112 (dub.), cf. Ep.Hebr.4.15, Plu.Cleom.1, etc.
4. abs., feel sympathy, Id.Tim.14, IG14.760 (Naples, i A.D.); ἐκ τοῦ παθεῖν γίγνωσκε καὶ τὸ συμπαθεῖν: καὶ σοὶ γὰρ ἄλλος συμπαθήσεται παθών (fut. Med. in act. sense) Philem.230, cf. Phld.Po.5.33.
