ταφ-ή , , (v. θάπτω)
A.burial, ταφῆς τυχεῖν, κυρῆσαι, Hdt.1.24,112: in pl., mode of burial, Id.2.85,5.8: pl. also of the burials of those who had fallen in battle, “δημοσίᾳ ταφὰς ἐποιήσαντοTh.2.34; νόμοι . . , οἷς ἐχρῶντο περὶ τὰς ταφάς ib.52, cf. OGI90.32 (Rosetta, ii B.C.).
2. pl. also, burial-place, Hdt.4.71, 5.63, S. Aj.1090, 1109: later in sg., Sammelb.6028.2, al. (i B.C.): but σῆς εἰ στερήσομαι ταφῆς, of the urn supposed to contain the ashes of Orestes, S.El.1210; so in Egypt, mummy, POxy.736.13 (i A.D.), Wilcken Chr. 499 (ii/iii A.D.), etc.; also, sarcophagus, δευτέρα τ., of a double sarcophagus, PGiss.68.7 (ii A.D.), Arch.Pap.4.133 (ii A.D.).
