A.set on fire from underneath, “ὑπῆψαν τὴν ἀκρόπολιν” Hdt.1.176; “ὑφῆψε δῶμ᾽ ἀνηφαίστῳ πυρί” E.Or.621, cf. 1618; “ὑ. πυράν” Th.2.52:—Pass., “πόλις ὑφάπτεται πυρί” E.Tr.1274; ἃς (sc. ἁμάξας）“ ἔδει ἐν καιρῷ ὑφαφθῆναι” Aen.Tact.28.7; εὕρωμεν (i. e. -ομεν）“ τὰς θύρας . . ὑφημ<μ>ένας φωτί” BGU1201.10 (i A. D.).
2. metaph., inflame unperceived, “τοὺς θεωμένους” X.Cyr.5.1.16.
II. light underneath, πῦρ, φλόγα, Luc.Phal.1.12, Aristaenet.2.4; ὁ νικέων ὑφαπτέτω τὰ ἱερά the winner (in the race) shall light the sacred lamps, SIG71.16 (Delph., ii B. C.): abs., light a fire under or in a place, Ar.Th.730.
B. Med., tie or bind under, ὑπὸ δειρὴν ἁψαμένη tying a rope round her neck, hanging herself, Alex.Aet.3.33.
