ὑπεξαιρ-έω ,
A.take away from below or gradually, αἷμ᾽ . τῶν κτανόντων drain away their blood, S.El.1420 (lyr.); “ἀντλεῖν καὶ . τὴν θάλαττανPlu.2.127c: Medic., βραχύ τι προστίθει ὑπεξαίρει take away (from the dose), Alex.Trall.Febr.7.
2. make away with, destroy secretly or gradually, τινας Pl.R.567b; “ὄλβον δωμάτων -ελώνE.Hipp.633; . τινὶ τὰ δεινά set him quit of all danger, Th.4.83; κεἰ μὲν φοβεῖται τοὐπίκλημ᾽ ὑπεξελεῖν -ελὼν codd.), αὐτὸς καθ᾽ αὑτοῦ [σημαινέτω] and even if he fears [thus] to do away with the accusation, let him give evidence himself against himself, S.OT227 (other explanations are given in Jebb's commentary):— Pass., to be made away with,ἐπιτήδειοι ὑπεξαιρεθῆναιTh.8.70; τούτων ὑπεξαραιρημένων these being out of the question, Hdt.7.8.γ́.
II. Med., take out privily for oneself, steal away, ὑπὲκ μήλων αἱρεύμενοι (sc. ἄρνας, ἐρίφους) Il.16.353; steal,τὴν τιμὴν τοῦ σίτουPh.2.71.
2. put aside, except, exclude,τὴν πρώτην ἡμέρανPh.1.3; “κατηγορήσειν ἕνα . . ὑπεξελόμενος δι᾽ οἰκειότηταPlu.Cat.Mi.21; “τὰ δόγματαArr.Epict.4.7.35; exempt,τινὰ τῆς ὕβρεωςPh.2.328; οὐδεμίαν . πρόφασιν making no exception, Theopomp. Hist.118: hence in Rhet., Alex.Fig.1.7 (and in Act., Zonae. Fig.5p.162S.).
3. remove, Pl.Tht.151c; τὸ ἄλγημα Sch.Epicur. Sent.29:—Pass., Diog.Oen.29.
4. reserve, put aside in safety,ἰδίων τι κτημάτωνD.19.78:—Pass., χῶραι ὑπεξειρημέναι (sic) reserved, IG7.413.20, al. (Oropus, i B.C.); to be excluded, excepted, Gal.16.528, PLond.5.1708.159 (vi A. D.).
