ὑπήν-η , , prop.
A.hair on the upper lip (which is the first to grow, cf. sq.), moustache, distd. from πώγων, Eub.100, cf. Phot., Suid.: generally, beard, A.Fr.27; “τὴν . ἄκουρον τρέφωνAr.V.476 (lyr.); “μολύνων τὴν .Id.Eq.1286 (troch.); ἕλκοντες ὑπήνας letting the beard grow long, trailing beards, Id.Lys.1072; ἄναξ ὑπήνης, of one with a huge beard, Pl.Com.122.
2. in Arist.HA518b18, it seems to mean the upper lip, καὶ τὴν . καὶ τὸ γένειον δασὺ ἔχειν, cf. Theoc.20.22.
