I. trans., shrink in fear under, cower before, c. acc., Hom., who uses mostly the aor. (usu. written with double δ for δϝ, v. δείδω, ὑπέδδεισαν, ὑποδδείσαντες, Il.1.406, 12.413, al.; “ὑποδείσατεOd.2.66: Ep. pf. 2 and plpf., “ὑποδείδια17.564, Philet.8, “ὑπεδείδισανIl.5.521: Ep. pf. 1ὑπαιδείδοικαh.Merc.165: literally, of birds, cower beneath,μέγαν αἰγυπιὸν ὑποδείσαντεςS.Aj. 169 (anap.).
