III. = χρέος or χρῆμα, affair, object, Id.4.191; simply, thing, Id.3.33.—The word is mostly Ep.— Hom. uses both forms χρεώ and χρειώ: but in the ellipt. phrase, mentioned 1.2, he always has χρεώ, as monosyll.:—in Il.11.606 χρεώ before a vowel is used short:—χρεώ is disyll. in Parm.1.28.
